Katonah Yoga Teacher Training

26 - 29 September 2024

Join Lisa Fraipont, the only Belgian Katonah Yoga teacher, for a 30-hour immersion into Katonah Yoga at The House of Yoga.

This training will include Katonah Yoga theory, active and restorative Katonah Yoga practices, pranayama and meditation.

This training is directed to yoga teachers wishing to add Katonah Yoga tools to their teaching repertoire as well yoga students wishing to deepen their own knowledge and understanding of this practice.

The training will be facilitated in English (with French assistance if necessary) and will count towards a 200-hour Katonah Yoga certification.

WHAT IS KATONAH YOGA?

Katonah Yoga® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being.

Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices.

Katonah Yoga is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern implies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight. Revelations are revolutionary.

TRAINING CURRICULUM

In this training we will explore the main themes of Katonah Yoga:

  • The body as a house
  • The body as an instrument
  • The body as origami.

We will play with forms: how poses and asana can be measured up with our own geometry to be more functional and how a pose can become formal and formidable.

Additional elements included in this training will be:

  • Group adjustments and self assists with props
  • Katonah Yoga breathwork
  • How to sequence a Katonah Yoga practice
  • Katonah Yoga restorative sequences

WHEN

The training will take place over four consecutive days between 26 – 29 September 2024 with the following training schedule:

  • Thursday 26 Sept: 8:00 – 12:00 / 14:00 – 17:30

ABOUT THE TRAINERS

Bruce

For over 16 years  and across four continents, Bruce has dedicated himself to inspiring yogis around the world. From Toronto to Singapore, Hong Kong to Dublin, and Bangkok to Cape Town, his personal practice is as varied as the places he has lived, and he has cultivated a teaching style that reflects his global perspective. Bruce’s thirst for knowledge has led him to acquiring thousands of hours of training from world-renowned teachers like Briohny Smyth, Dice Iida-Klein, Tiffany Cruickshank, and Jason Crandell, to name but a few.

His greatest teachers, however, are the students he’s had the privilege of guiding, which provides ongoing texture and dimension to his continually evolving practice. Bruce believes that the path of yoga is a life-long expedition to self-reflection and realization.

Rebecca

Rebecca is a New Yorker recently transplanted to Lisbon, Portugal who has been studying yoga and meditation for over 25 years.  She was a former opera singer who got her Masters in Music at SUNY Purchase and accredits the discipline and understanding of subtlety in her practice to her years of strict training. She followed her love of yoga out of the opera world and into her 200hr training over 14 years ago in NYC and discovered her life’s purpose. Eager to soak up the vast wealth of yogic wisdom in NYC Rebecca explored Ashtanga, Iyengar, Forrest, Hatha, Kundalini, Katonah, Dharma and Bhakti yoga which allowed her to deepen her practice and refine her distinctive style of teaching.

Her 500hr Advanced Teacher Training (ERYT) was completed with her long time mentor Yogi Charu of Saraswati lineage in Hatha yoga and Tantric meditation in 2015. She has since delved more deeply into bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion and studying yoga philosophy through the Vedic texts and mantra with her teachers Raghunath Cappo and Kausthuba Das. Dedicated to the yogic path Rebecca will always consider herself a student first, and a teacher second. In addition to teaching online and in person with group classes, privates and Kirtans Rebecca leads workshops, teacher trainings and yoga retreats around the globe.

Hands-On Assisting Training

19 - 21 April 2024

Hands-On Assisting Training

Following up on her Hands-On Assisting workshop of last Spring, join Lisa for this first 20-hour Hands-On Assisting Teacher Training at The House of Yoga.

In groups of 2 or sometimes more, you will rediscover familiar yoga poses as well as poses coming from Katonah Yoga with the help of props and the leverage of another human body.

***

Yoga is often a solitary practice. However, by practicing posture adjustments we learn to rely on others and to trust, while communicating with them. Through these adjustments we establish a dialogue through contact, we feel and understand in our feet, in our hands what may be happening with the other.

Adjustments are meant to take you to places you would not go to by yourself, there is no goal of making the pose better, “correct” or to go deeper in the pose. Think of it more like a conversation as opposed to a monologue: a way for you to be in a pose without using so much strength, to make it more rich and fluid, to use your eyes, your hands, props and language to make the experience fuller.

In this training, you will be introduced to fundamental concepts with regard to physical touch in a yoga space and will be provided with the opportunity to practice different adjustments on different bodies. This is a key component because all bodies are unique, feel different and will respond in their own way.

By the end of these 20 hours you will walk away with:

  1. A sense of how to adapt different adjustments to different bodies
  2. A more confident touch
  3. A clear idea of how to communicate with your words and hands

This training is primarily intended for yoga teachers or aspiring yoga teachers, but can absolutely support anyone working in the area of bodywork or just practitioners who are curious to further develop their yoga practice.

This training will consist of 20 hours over the course of a full weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) from 19 – 21 April 2021.

Schedule:

Friday, 19 April

  • 8:30 – 12:00
  • 12:00 – 14:00 lunch break
  • 14:00 – 17:00

Saturday, 20 April

  • 13:30 – 20:00

Sunday, 21 April

  • 8:30 – 12:00
  • 12:00 – 13:00 lunch break
  • 13:00 – 16:30

WHEN: 19, 20, 21 April 2024
WHERE: The House of Yoga
