Introduction to the Ashtanga Half Primary Series
Sunday, 29 October 2023
Join Giulia for this practical workshop where you’ll have the opportunity to explore and practice the poses of the Ashtanga Half Primary Series.
We’ll introduce the foundational aspects of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga (breath, bandha and drishti), and we’ll practice the poses of the Half Primary Series:
- Sun salutations (A and B)
- Standing sequence
- Seated postures (up till navasana)
- Closing sequence
We’ll take a functional approach to the asana, meaning that during the practice we’ll explore each posture by providing explanations on the main intention for each of them, and the possible ways to better adjust them to your body. We’ll include the use of props, gentle adjustments, and modifications to allow you to practice independently and sustainably.
No prior knowledge of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is required.
This workshop is best suited for those who already have some experience with yoga and are curious about the Ashtanga practice as well as for those who already have some knowledge of the Ashtanga Half Primary Series and would like to deepen their understanding of the sequence.

A few words on Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga:
Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is one of the systems of Hatha yoga that synchronises breath and movement in a flowing sequence of asanas (postures).
It has its basis in the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya and his student K. Pattabhi Jois, who evolved this system of linking breath and movement in sequences of asanas. It has heavily influenced modern yoga through the introduction of vinyasa that is fundamental to many styles and schools of yoga.
When practised regularly, it can help to develop strength, flexibility, stamina and cultivate a still and focused mind. Poses (asanas) are linked in a sequence, each held for a number of breaths (typically 5) before transitioning through a specific series of movements (vinyasa) to the next pose.
We repeat a set sequence of postures each time we practice, so that the sequence becomes familiar, and in doing so we develop a self practice.
